Dan Nettleton, distinguished professor and Laurence H. Baker Endowed Chair in Biological Statistics, has been reappointed as the Chair of Iowa State University's Department of Statistics. With a proven track record in community-building and resource management, Nettleton's leadership has been pivotal in elevating the department's excellence.
Nettleton, who initially assumed the role in 2019, will continue in his position for another five-year term starting July 1. His reappointment has garnered praise from Daniel J. Robison, the endowed dean's chair of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Beate Schmittmann, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Under Nettleton's leadership, the department has witnessed remarkable progress, moving from excellence to even higher standards. He has encouraged faculty to share their research through various channels, supported their professional growth, and played a crucial role in hosting the department's 75th-anniversary celebration.
Nettleton's proactive approach during the COVID-19 pandemic showcased his commitment to the community. He led statistical analyses of infection data and contributed to the development of on-campus testing protocols. His innovative efforts extend to improving the learning experience for students, with initiatives like a summer undergraduate research program and a seminar series for incoming graduate students.
Nettleton's collaborative leadership extends beyond the department, with involvement in the Data Science program and efforts towards proposing a new applied statistics degree program. His vision for the future includes strengthening educational programs, expanding interdisciplinary collaborations, and providing unwavering support to students, alumni, faculty, and staff.
Recognized for his leadership excellence, Nettleton received the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Award for Early Achievement in Departmental Leadership in 2021. Beyond his administrative responsibilities, he is acclaimed for his collaborative research in statistical methods applied to high-dimensional biological datasets.
As the Baker Endowed Chair, Nettleton focuses on developing statistical methods for plant and animal biological systems. His contributions have earned him prestigious awards, including the Iowa State University Award for Mid-Career Achievement in Research (2012) and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Outstanding Career Achievement in Research Award (2015).
With his commitment to excellence, innovative initiatives, and collaborative spirit, Nettleton continues to shape the future of Iowa State University's Department of Statistics.
