Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach will host the Conservation Drainage School from August 26–28 at the Borlaug Learning Center on ISU’s Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm in Nashua, Iowa.
This educational program will focus on practical and science-based subsurface drainage practices that help improve water quality downstream.
Designed for a wide range of participants—contractors, farmers, engineers, watershed coordinators, and local officials—the school will offer both classroom learning and hands-on training.
Participants will explore the design and function of several conservation-focused systems including saturated buffers, bioreactors, constructed wetlands, controlled drainage, oxbows, and two-stage ditches.
“Conservation Drainage School provides educational opportunities for all interested in drainage,” said Matt Helmers, professor and agricultural engineering specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “The school focuses on the planning and design of water quality improvement practices that can be applied directly in the field.”
Students will work in teams to solve drainage challenges, apply classroom knowledge, and create drainage designs. They will also visit farms where these systems are already installed and engage in panel discussions with experienced contractors.
This training is especially valuable for professionals looking to add new services to their offerings, especially when traditional tiling work is slowed. By learning how to plan and install conservation practices, participants can stay active while supporting environmental health.
Registration costs $475 if completed by August 11. Late registration is $525 and closes on August 18. The fee includes meals, materials, and reference documents. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.
The course also qualifies for Professional Development Hours and Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) continuing education units.
More information and registration can be found on the Conservation Drainage School website, or by contacting ISU Registration Services.
