Iowa Learning Farms, an outreach and education program from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, has released a new infographic series titled Protecting Our Pollinators.
The series is designed to educate and inspire Iowans to take practical actions that protect pollinators—vital contributors to agriculture and natural ecosystems.
The infographics provide facts about pollinator species found in Iowa and highlight their essential role in maintaining biodiversity and food production.
They also explain the causes behind the declining populations of bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, emphasizing issues like habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate challenges.
“These infographics were developed in response to what we heard in multiple listening sessions and workshops with Iowans,” said Liz Ripley, ILF conservation and cover crop outreach specialist. “Our goal is to equip anyone interested in pollinators with knowledge and ways they can help pollinators thrive.”
Each infographic focuses on simple, actionable steps for individuals, landowners, and communities. The series includes tips for supporting pollinators in home gardens, community spaces, farms, and public areas such as roadsides and parks.
By sharing clear and visually engaging content, Iowa Learning Farms aims to make environmental stewardship both accessible and inspiring.
Ripley noted that understanding the link between wildlife, food systems, and human activity encourages communities to protect pollinators and their habitats.
The project was funded by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
