Discover the latest in tree care at the 68th Annual Shade Tree Short Course, hosted by Iowa State University on Feb. 21-22. Arborists, industry professionals, students, and educators are invited to engage with top experts and a rich array of topics.
Organized by Jeff Iles, a horticulture professor at Iowa State, the event boasts speakers from across the country, renowned in their respective fields. Notable returnees include John Ball and Guy Sternberg ("Mr. Oak").
Workshop sessions cover diverse topics such as tree appraisal, the new USDA Hardiness Zone Map, tree grafting, and more. Insect enthusiasts can delve into sessions on the periodical cicada, scale insects, and the spongy moth. Suzanne Wainwright-Evans will enlighten attendees on beneficial insects and how to preserve them.
Safety is a priority, with sessions on handling loads and pesticides on trailers, managing equipment near powerlines, and addressing homeowner concerns.
Originating from the need to combat Dutch elm disease, this course continues to provide valuable education. Participants can earn continuing education credits, including Pesticide Applicator CICs and International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) CEUs. The STSC also partners with the Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects for LA CES approved courses.
Register by Feb. 9 for the discounted rate of $210, or pay $260 afterward. Iowa State staff and full-time students enjoy additional discounts.
