Tennessee farmers impacted by Hurricane Helene now have a renewed opportunity to apply for the state’s primary agricultural support scheme.
The Tennessee Department of Agriculture has reopened applications for the Tennessee Agricultural Enhancement Program (TAEP) specifically for those who missed the initial October window due to the hurricane.
Eligibility extends to farmers in Carter, Claiborne, and ten other counties as identified in Governor Bill Lee’s disaster declaration.
Commissioner Charlie Hatcher highlighted the difficult circumstances farmers faced during the storm, stating, “Hurricane Helene devastated upper East Tennessee just days before the scheduled TAEP application period,” and expressing relief that these farmers can now participate in the TAEP.
Applications are available online starting December 2, 2024, and must be submitted by December 6. This program, established in 2005, aims to provide cost-sharing funds to producers looking to invest in long-term agricultural and community development.
More than 7,600 farmers applied for the program in October, with final notifications of approval due by year's end.
TAEP offers various programs including Dairy Solutions, Hay Storage, and Livestock Equipment, aiming to enhance farm profitability, safety, and efficiency.
