Johnson County Announces Third Round of Food and Farm Grant Applications

Johnson County Announces Third Round of Food and Farm Grant Applications

By Andi Anderson

Johnson County is inviting applications for the third round of its Community Food and Farm Grant, commencing on March 15, 2024. With funding totaling up to $350,000, this grant aims to assist local farms and food businesses in navigating the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grant, made possible through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), seeks to address the disruptions experienced by small farms, food businesses, and households, which have altered the landscape of food production, distribution, and accessibility.

Eligible entities, including small farm and food businesses, nonprofits, and individuals involved in community-based food production or distribution in Johnson County, can apply for grants ranging from $1,000 to $25,000. Projects eligible for funding should align with one or more of the following objectives:

  • Supporting the growth, processing, cooking, or distribution of community-based food
  • Facilitating skill development for farm and food business workers through education and technical assistance
  • Enhancing access to community-based food for low-income communities

To qualify, applicants must meet specified criteria available on the Johnson County website. Applications, available in English, Spanish, Arabic, and French, must be submitted online by April 12, 2024. An appointed review committee comprising Local Food staff and Food Policy Council members will assess applications and provide funding recommendations, subject to approval by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors.

In addition to online resources, Johnson County will host Community Food and Farm Grant Application Clinics and 1-on-1 Grant Writing Support sessions to assist applicants. These sessions, offered in multiple languages and locations, aim to provide guidance and technical assistance throughout the application process.

For further details and assistance, interested parties can contact Johnson County Local Food staff at localfoods@johnsoncountyiowa.gov or 319-688-5840. Join Johnson County in supporting local food initiatives and fostering resilience in the face of challenges posed by the pandemic.
