The Iowa Farm Bureau has announced its 2024 Young Farmer Leadership Award recipients: James Hepp of Calhoun County, Nate Hofmann of Linn County, and Kaitlyn Porter of Franklin County.
This prestigious award, named in honor of former president Bob Joslin, is given to farmers under 35 who show exceptional leadership in their communities and in the field of agriculture.
Each recipient is awarded a $2,000 grant to support a non-profit of their choice, along with trips to both the 2025 American Farm Bureau Annual Convention and the Iowa Farm Bureau Young Farmer Conference.
They receive $1,500 in cash from GROWMARK and a $500 gift certificate from Grainger, underscoring the extensive support for young leaders in agriculture.
James Hepp, a first-generation farmer, has distinguished himself by his commitment to soil health and conservation practices, such as cover crops and no-till farming.
Hepp's efforts include hosting field days to educate other farmers on sustainable practices.
His dedication extends beyond farming; he is also a volunteer firefighter and teaches local youth about farming and safety. Hepp plans to donate his award grant to the Hometown Heroes Memorial Ride, which supports public safety careers and aids families of first responders.
This award highlights the significant impact that young, innovative farmers can have in advancing agricultural practices and strengthening community ties.
The recipients' dedication to both their craft and their communities sets a powerful example for future generations of farmers.
Through their leadership, they contribute to agricultural sustainability and enhance the social fabric of their local areas. The ongoing support from the Iowa Farm Bureau for young farmers ensures that the future of agriculture remains vibrant and community focused.
