Iowa state showcases latest in horticulture

By Andi Anderson

At this year’s Farm Progress Show, Iowa State University’s horticulture team will present a unique and informative display showcasing innovative growing techniques that go beyond traditional field farming.

From August 27-29, visitors can explore a variety of horticulture practices that demonstrate how crops can be successfully grown in greenhouses, on lawns, and even on water.

One of the standout features of the exhibit will be a small-scale hydroponics model. This setup, resembling a large fish tank, will illustrate how garden plants can be grown on water within a table-sized container.

The hydroponics model, complete with a flowing water system and lights, offers a high-tech yet accessible way to grow plants indoors or in a greenhouse. According to Cindy Haynes, a professor and extension specialist in horticulture at Iowa State, this method requires less space than traditional gardening and can be easily replicated at home.

In addition to the hydroponics display, the exhibit will feature an outdoor section dedicated to turfgrass care. Adam Thoms, a turfgrass specialist at Iowa State, will demonstrate lawn care techniques on a mini replica of an Iowa State football field.

Visitors can take pictures on the field while learning about sod maintenance and the growing demand for lawn care services, both as a hobby and a potential business.

Kathleen Delate, a professor and extension organic specialist, will also be present to discuss the expanding opportunities in organic agriculture.

With organic farming gaining momentum in Iowa and across the U.S., Delate will provide valuable insights into transitioning to organic methods and the financial benefits of doing so, including USDA cost-share programs for transitioning farmers.

Haynes expressed enthusiasm about returning to the Farm Progress Show after several years, promising a hands-on sensory experience for all attendees. The horticulture team aims to engage visitors with interactive displays and expert advice on topics ranging from home gardening to commercial horticulture ventures.

The Iowa State University exhibit will be located at the corner of 7th Street and Central Avenue, offering a comprehensive look at the future of horticulture and its potential for diversifying farming practices.
