Iowa Specialty Crop Grants 2024

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has announced that it is now accepting applications for the 2024 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program through March 1, 2024. This initiative is aimed at bolstering the competitiveness of specialty crops cultivated within the state, using funding provided by the USDA. The program seeks applications from entities that propose projects which could lead to increased demand for these crops, improvements in yields, or enhanced awareness among consumers and producers.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, highlighted the growing consumer interest in local food and agricultural products under the Choose Iowa initiative, emphasizing the importance of the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program in supporting Iowa farmers and producers to diversify and increase their supply to meet this demand. The program is positioned as a key component in fostering new market opportunities, investing in research, and enhancing the competitiveness of Iowa’s specialty crop industry.

Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants include Iowa agencies, universities, institutions, producers, industry associations, and community-based organizations.

Applicants must reside and/or conduct their business or organization in Iowa and be in good standing.

Projects should benefit the specialty crop industry as a whole and not just a single product or entity.

Project Eligibility:

The focus is on projects that enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops grown in Iowa, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticultural and nursery crops, excluding livestock and poultry.

Funding Details:

The total allocation for Iowa under this program for the year is $368,627.98, with a maximum sub-award amount of $30,000 per project.

The program may adjust the maximum award amount if necessary to ensure all available funds are utilized.

Application Process:

Applications must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. CT on March 1, 2024.

Interested parties can download the grant application materials from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship website

This grant program represents a significant opportunity for those in the agriculture sector in Iowa to secure funding for innovative projects that can lead to greater efficiency, market expansion, and increased visibility for the state's specialty crops.
