Iowa stands tall as the primary producer of hogs in the United States, according to the USDA's Economic Research Service. In 2022, Iowa boasted approximately $10.9 billion in cash receipts from hog production.
Following closely behind Iowa are Minnesota, North Carolina, and Illinois, with cash receipts totaling $3.6 billion, $3.1 billion, and $2.1 billion, respectively.
Iowa's dominance in hog production is evident, representing about 35.5% of the total U.S. cash receipts for hogs in 2022, amounting to $30.6 billion. The top ten hog-producing states collectively contributed 87.6% of hog receipts, underscoring the significant role these states play in the industry.
According to the latest Hogs and Pigs report from the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, the United States had nearly 75 million hogs as of December 1, 2023, indicating the substantial scale of the industry.
The USDA's Economic Research Service provides estimates of farm sector cash receipts reflecting the cash income received from agricultural commodity sales three times annually. Cash receipts signify the value of hogs sold by farmers to processors or final users, serving as a crucial economic indicator for the agricultural sector.
Iowa's continued leadership in hog production not only contributes significantly to the state's economy but also underscores its pivotal role in meeting the nation's demand for pork products.
