Gov. Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation effective immediately through December 23, 2023, for Sioux County, Iowa, following the USDA's confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in commercial layer chickens.
The proclamation mobilizes Iowa Homeland Security and the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, among other agencies, to deploy resources for tracking, monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection. Additionally, it temporarily suspends certain commercial vehicle-related regulations to facilitate a swift response to affected sites.
Emphasizing public safety, Gov. Reynolds assured that recent HPAI detections in birds do not pose an immediate public health threat. She reaffirmed that poultry products remain safe for consumption. However, producers are urged to promptly contact their veterinarians upon suspecting any signs of HPAI in their flocks.
This proactive approach aims to contain and manage the avian flu outbreak swiftly, ensuring both animal welfare and the safety of poultry products for consumers. Gov. Reynolds' proclamation underlines the state's commitment to mitigating and addressing such critical situations swiftly.
