The 2023 Iowa Swine Day conference will bring together experts and professionals in the pork industry to discuss pressing issues and potential solutions for sustainable animal agriculture. The event will feature plenary speakers Banks Baker and Jack Bobo, who will share their perspectives on genetic improvements and the role of animal agriculture in addressing global challenges.
Banks Baker, Global Director of Product Sustainability for PIC, will highlight the significance of genetic advancements, including gene editing, in driving more efficient pork production and enhancing animal welfare. Drawing upon his experience in implementing greenhouse gas reduction strategies and managing animal health and welfare policies, Baker will emphasize the holistic benefits that genetic improvements can bring to the entire value chain of the food system.
Jack Bobo, Director of Global Food and Water Policy at the Nature Conservancy and a renowned futurist, will offer insights into the future of food and the evolving consumer demand for sustainable food products. Through his presentation titled "Can animal agriculture save the planet?", Bobo will explore the relationship between a growing population, changing demographics, and the role of animal agriculture in meeting the demands of a sustainable food system.
The Iowa Swine Day program will take place on June 29 at the Scheman Building on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. The conference will feature plenary sessions in the morning, followed by concurrent sessions in the afternoon, covering topics such as sustainable pork production, strategies for foreign animal disease and health, the future of pig farming, and research conducted at Iowa State University.
Attendees will have the opportunity to choose from a range of presentations and sessions to suit their interests. A preconference ISU Swine Networking Social will also be held on June 28, providing further opportunities for networking and discussion among participants.
The Iowa Swine Day conference, hosted by the Iowa Pork Industry Center with support from the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, aims to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration to drive sustainable practices and innovation in the pork industry.
