Elevate your pasture skills in Lehigh

Elevate your pasture skills in Lehigh

By Andi Anderson

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is organizing a pasture management field day on Wednesday, July 10, at a 200-acre site in Lehigh.

This event will address several pressing issues faced by local farmers, including extended periods of drought and the challenges of managing short pastures.

“This field day will cover the basics of pasture management,” said Russ Euken, a beef specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. Amid recent environmental challenges, topics will include managing grazing with surplus forage, establishing new pastures, renovating existing ones, and exploring fertility options to maintain healthy pastures.

The field day will provide practical insights into weed identification and control strategies. “We will have NRCS staff present to discuss available programs,” added Linda Cline, extension coordinator for ISU Extension and Outreach in Webster County.

These programs aim to support producers through initiatives for forage seedings, interseeding, brush management, and more, which are vital for optimizing pasture productivity.

The day’s agenda is packed with valuable presentations from seasoned experts:

  • Grazing management strategies by Russ Euken
  • Fertility and weed management by Angie Rieck-Hinz, extension field agronomist
  • USDA programs for pastures by Kelly Oliver, USDA-NRCS district conservationist

The event is strategically planned at 2998 Park Ave., Lehigh, allowing participants to engage directly with the land they are learning about.

The session will begin with a casual dinner of grilled burgers provided by the Webster County Cattlemen at 6 p.m., followed by the educational program at 6:30 p.m. The event is expected to conclude by 8 p.m.

This field day is an essential opportunity for farmers and agronomists to gain firsthand knowledge from experts and to network with other industry professionals.

It promises to be an enlightening evening for all attendees, equipping them with the tools and knowledge needed to enhance their pasture management practices effectively.
