Women who would like to become more familiar with operating chainsaws can do so in a women-centered program April 6-7 at Camp lo-Dis-E-CA, just east of Solon.
The “Chainsaw Academy for Women” is a hands-on course that offers a mix of class instruction and in-field education, covering topics such as safety, personal protective equipment and saw maintenance, as well as basic saw operation and limb cutting.
This beginner-level course is offered through a partnership with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Bur Oak Land Trust and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
“This is a great weekend getaway with learning opportunities and the chance to meet new people. The event will offer daytime learning focused on chainsaws, and on Saturday evening, we will learn about tree identification from a DNR forester and spend time getting to know each other,” said Julia Baker, natural resource program specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. “Weather permitting, we hope to spend time talking and sitting around a campfire in the evening.”
Camp lo-Dis-E-CA is located midway between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The registration cost covers overnight lodging at the camp and four meals during the weekend. Dinner will be catered by a local favorite, Ruzicka's Catering.
The class furthers the mission of the Women's Woodland Stewardship Network to provide women with knowledge and skills that can empower them to actively manage woodlands that they own or have influence over and make connections with other women interested in woodland management.
“All who identify as women are welcome to join us and learn from Bur Oak Land Trust’s team of female chainsaw instructors,” said Baker.
The program runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, in addition to the evening program Saturday night. Participants must attend both days to complete the course. Additional information about what to pack and how
