Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has issued a disaster proclamation for Buena Vista County in response to a confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial turkey flock. The proclamation is effective immediately through November 19, 2023.
HPAI is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect all types of birds, including poultry. The virus can spread through contact with infected birds, their droppings, or their saliva. HPAI can also be spread through contaminated feed, water, or equipment.
The disaster proclamation allows state resources from Iowa Homeland Security, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and other agencies to assist with tracking and monitoring, rapid detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection of the virus. The proclamation also waives regulatory provisions related to commercial vehicles responding to affected sites.
The recent HPAI detections in birds do not present an immediate public health concern, and it remains safe to eat poultry products. However, farmers and poultry producers are urged to be aware of the signs of HPAI and contact their veterinarian immediately if they suspect an outbreak.
The signs of HPAI in birds include:
- Sudden death without clinical signs
- Respiratory distress
- Sneezing, coughing, and gasping for air
- Lethargy
- Lack of appetite
- Swelling around the eyes, neck, and head
- Purple discoloration of the shanks and feet
Farmers and poultry producers in Iowa should be aware of the signs of HPAI and contact their veterinarian immediately if they suspect an outbreak.
