Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is organizing a series of Fertilizer and Finance workshops across Iowa to help agricultural professionals make better nutrient management decisions during a period of high fertilizer costs. The workshops are designed for farmers, crop advisers, agricultural lenders, and others involved in farm management and production planning.
Managing fertilizer expenses is an important part of maintaining farm profitability. Rising input costs have increased the need for producers to carefully evaluate fertilizer investments and ensure that every application provides the greatest possible return. The workshops aim to provide practical information that combines agronomic knowledge with financial planning.
Participants will learn about current fertilizer cost trends and how market conditions can affect farm budgets. Experts will also explain how to interpret soil test results to make informed phosphorus, potassium, and lime recommendations. These practices can help producers improve nutrient efficiency while supporting healthy crop growth.
Another key focus of the program is fertilizer budgeting. Attendees will gain insights into strategies for allocating fertilizer dollars effectively and identifying opportunities to maximize returns on investment. By understanding both fertility management and financial considerations, participants can make decisions that support long-term farm success.
Rebecca Vittetoe, Extension Field Agronomist at Iowa State University, highlighted the purpose of the workshops, stating, "The goal is to help producers make confident decisions about where fertilizer dollars will have the greatest impact. By combining fertility management principles with financial analysis, participants will gain tools they can use to evaluate costs, manage risk and maximize returns."
The workshops will be held at four locations across Iowa during August. The northwestern Iowa session will take place on August 13 in Boyden and will be led by Leah Ten Napel, Extension Field Agronomist, and Tim Christensen, Extension Farm Management Specialist. The northern Iowa workshop will be held on August 25 in Mason City and presented by Angie Rieck-Hinz, Extension Field Agronomist, and Eric Weuve, Extension Farm Management Specialist.
The eastern Iowa event is scheduled for August 26 in Iowa City and will be led by Rebecca Vittetoe, Extension Field Agronomist, and Ryan Drollette, Extension Farm Management Specialist. The central Iowa workshop will take place on August 27 in Perry with presentations from Meaghan Anderson, Extension Field Agronomist, and Patrick Hatting, Extension Farm Management Specialist.
Registration for the workshops is $60 per participant, and advance registration is encouraged at least three business days before each event. Through these educational sessions, Iowa State University Extension aims to help agricultural professionals strengthen nutrient management practices, reduce financial risk, and improve overall farm profitability.
