Iowans curious about artificial intelligence but unsure where to start will have the chance to learn in a welcoming setting this fall.
On Tuesday, September 23, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host a virtual workshop titled The ABCs of AI: Workforce Training for the Effective, Ethical Use of AI. The session will run from 9 a.m. to noon, with a registration fee of $100.
Designed for adults with little or no prior experience, the workshop aims to demystify generative AI. Participants will gain hands-on practice with AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Grok, or Gemini, while also learning the limits of these tools.
Lead instructor Scott Samuelson, professor of practice with ISU Extension, said many people know AI is important but remain hesitant. “AI is here to stay, and people know they should understand it. But there’s still a lot of hesitation: What is this technology really good for, and how do you use it without giving up your judgment or ethics?” he explained.
The session will cover ways AI can make everyday work tasks easier, from drafting summaries to generating ideas, while also addressing potential risks like bias, incorrect responses, and over-automation.
Samuelson emphasized that participants do not need to be programmers or engineers. “They just need a working understanding of what the tools can and can’t do. And they need to feel empowered to decide when not to use them,” he said.
The workshop includes guided demonstrations, Q&A opportunities, and strategies to integrate AI into professional workflows responsibly. Attendees are encouraged to register for a free AI platform in advance, with technical assistance available at login for those who need help.
This event is part of a five-part leadership workshop series launched by ISU Extension’s Community and Economic Development unit, built from feedback of more than 300 Iowa leaders. The series addresses timely challenges like conflict navigation, community engagement, and data-driven decision-making.
“These sessions are about equipping Iowans to lead in a changing world,” Samuelson said. “AI is a perfect example—new, confusing, sometimes overhyped, but also full of possibilities when approached with care.”
