Iowa State Students Prepare for CALS Career Day Success

By Andi Anderson

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Iowa State University is dedicated to helping students transform their academic experiences into meaningful careers.

This mission comes to life through the upcoming CALS Career Day, scheduled for October 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center.

The event brings together hundreds of employers and thousands of students for a day focused on preparation, connection, and opportunity.

For many students, CALS Career Day serves as their first major networking experience in college. To help them succeed, Iowa State provides a full suite of preparation tools, such as the Freshman Resume Workshop, resume review sessions, and individualized career counseling.

Agricultural business freshman Nora Pickhinke credits the program for helping her learn “how to format a resume and understand what professionals are looking for.”

Professional development is also a major focus. Through the CALS Pathways to Innovation and Leadership program, students participate in sessions like “Styled for Success” and the Business Attire Pop-Up Shop, designed to boost confidence and professionalism.

On Career Day, students can also take professional headshots to enhance their online portfolios and LinkedIn profiles.

Industry speakers and employers provide insights into career paths, job expectations, and skills valued in the agriculture and life sciences industries.

CALS Career Services staff also offer mock interviews, cover letter guidance, and job search assistance through CyHire, Iowa State’s career management system.

CALS offers diverse majors and internship opportunities, from agronomy and food science to education and policy, giving students the flexibility to find their perfect career match.

This commitment to hands-on learning and career preparation has resulted in remarkable success—97% of CALS graduates have secured their first career choice for over two decades.

Through Career Day and continuous support from Career Services, Iowa State’s CALS equips students with the tools, confidence, and connections they need to launch their professional futures.
