The Iowa Master Gardener Program is inviting individuals who enjoy gardening, learning, and community service to apply for its Fall 2026 Garden Academy training. Applications are being accepted through August 14, and the training session will begin on August 31.
The program is offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and has helped educate gardening enthusiasts across the state for more than four decades. The upcoming Garden Academy will be available in 34 Iowa counties, providing an opportunity for people from different backgrounds and experience levels to expand their horticultural knowledge.
According to Alicia Herzog, Master Gardener program manager with ISU Extension and Outreach, the program has successfully engaged thousands of participants over the years. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has offered Master Gardener training for over 40 years, engaging more than 15,000 people in learning about research-based gardening practices.
Individuals interested in becoming Iowa Master Gardeners must first select a participating county and submit an application. Accepted participants will complete the online Garden Academy training and attend an in-person volunteer orientation organized by their local county office.
After completing the educational portion of the program, trainees are required to finish a 40-hour internship within their county. This hands-on experience allows participants to apply the knowledge gained through training while contributing to local projects and community initiatives.
Iowa Master Gardeners take part in a wide range of activities that benefit communities. Volunteer opportunities include caring for ornamental gardens, growing fresh produce for donation to local food pantries, and delivering educational presentations on gardening and horticulture topics. These efforts help promote healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and environmental awareness.
The program welcomes participants regardless of their gardening experience. Whether someone is a beginner looking to learn the basics or an experienced gardener seeking advanced knowledge, the training provides access to research-based information and practical learning opportunities.
