Garden enthusiasts now have a new opportunity to strengthen their horticulture knowledge through a flexible online learning program. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has expanded access to its Garden Academy by offering the Iowa Home Gardener course in a fully on-demand format throughout the year.
Garden Academy serves as the core horticulture training program that supports Iowa Master Gardener education. The program is designed to provide participants with a strong understanding of gardening principles, plant care, and sustainable landscape management. The newly expanded format allows learners to access course materials whenever it is most convenient for them.
The Iowa Home Gardener track is ideal for a wide range of participants, including home gardeners, homesteaders, adult learners, and professionals working in the green industry. The course is especially useful for individuals seeking practical knowledge that can be applied in home landscapes, vegetable gardens, flower beds, and other gardening projects.
The program contains approximately ten weeks of educational content. Because the course is self-paced, participants can work through lessons according to their schedules without the need to attend live classes. This flexibility allows busy individuals to gain valuable horticulture training while balancing personal and professional commitments.
Course topics cover many important areas of gardening and plant care. Participants learn about plant basics and propagation techniques, soil health, nutrient management, and methods for growing edible crops. Additional lessons focus on trees, shrubs, landscape plants, ornamentals, indoor plants, weed management, pest management, and diagnosing plant problems. The course also highlights sustainable gardening practices and ways to support wildlife habitats.
Alicia Herzog, Iowa Master Gardener Program Manager for ISU Extension and Outreach, emphasized the benefits of the new learning format. She said, “We are excited to increase access to the course for our non-volunteer audience by now offering the Iowa Home Gardener track 100% asynchronously, year-round. We hope self-motivated adult learners will value having access to a high-quality educational offering that fits their busy schedules.”
The updated format makes horticulture education more accessible to individuals interested in improving their gardening knowledge without the restrictions of a traditional classroom schedule. Learners can study at a comfortable pace while building confidence in their gardening skills.
Participants can enroll in the program through the ISU Extension Store and receive access to all course materials for 12 months from the date of purchase. This extended access provides ample time to complete lessons, revisit topics, and reinforce learning.
Upon successfully finishing the course, participants receive a certificate of completion recognizing their achievement and commitment to horticulture education.
By offering year-round, self-paced access, the Iowa Home Gardener program helps more people develop practical gardening skills, improve plant care knowledge, and build successful home landscapes. The program represents a valuable educational opportunity for anyone interested in gardening, sustainability, and horticultural excellence.
