Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in partnership with the Digital Ag Innovation Lab at Iowa State, is set to organize Combine University, a specialized training program designed to help farmers prepare for the upcoming harvest season. The workshop aims to strengthen participants’ understanding of combine operations, machine maintenance, and data management.
The single-day training sessions will be held on Aug. 24, 25, and 26 in Boone, Iowa. The program is designed to provide practical knowledge and hands-on experience that can help farmers improve harvest efficiency while reducing equipment-related issues during the busy season.
Modeled after the successful Planter University program, Combine University focuses on the link between machine performance and data accuracy. Participants will learn how proper machine adjustments can improve harvesting results and help avoid costly downtime.
The workshop will cover several important topics. Farmers will receive detailed instruction on combine basics, including material flow and essential maintenance practices. Training will also focus on key machine components such as feeder house chains, headers, and clean grain elevators to ensure equipment is ready for peak performance.
Another major area of focus will be technology and calibration. Attendees will learn best practices for calibrating yield monitors and adjusting sensors, helping them collect accurate field data that can support better management decisions.
The program will also provide practical methods for identifying and reducing grain loss. Participants will gain experience using industry-standard mobile applications and drop-pan techniques to measure losses and determine where improvements can be made.
In addition, experts will discuss the agronomic effects of harvest operations, including the importance of uniform residue distribution. Proper residue management can contribute to improved crop performance in the following growing season.
Each workshop session will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and lunch will be provided. The registration fee is $249 per person, and interested participants must register by Aug. 19. The workshops will take place at Blomgren Seeds, located at 1927 250th Street, Boone.
Combine University offers farmers a valuable opportunity to improve harvesting skills, enhance data accuracy, and maximize overall field performance through expert-led training and practical learning experiences.
