National 4-H Week, celebrated from October 4-10, recognizes the positive impact that 4-H has on young people, families, volunteers, and communities across Iowa. The annual observance highlights the role of 4-H in helping youth build confidence, develop life skills, and prepare for future success through hands-on learning experiences.
For more than 100 years, 4-H has supported youth development by encouraging learning through real-world experiences. The program helps young people explore interests in agriculture, natural resources, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, healthy living, communications, leadership, creative arts, and community service. Through clubs, camps, educational events, projects, and leadership opportunities, participants gain valuable knowledge and practical skills that benefit them throughout their lives.
According to Mitchell Hoyer, Iowa 4-H Youth Development program leader, the program plays a significant role in helping young people discover their strengths and pursue their goals.
"As we celebrate National 4-H Week, we're reminded that 4-H is much more than a program. It's a place where young people discover their spark, develop essential life skills and build meaningful relationships with caring adults and peers," said Mitchell Hoyer, Iowa 4-H Youth Development program leader. “Every day, Iowa 4-H members are learning to lead, solve problems, serve others and contribute to their communities. Those experiences help prepare them not just for their next opportunity, but for a lifetime of success.”
This year's National 4-H Week theme, "Beyond Ready," emphasizes the importance of preparing young people for a rapidly changing world. Through participation in 4-H activities, youth develop critical thinking, communication, teamwork, responsibility, and leadership skills. These experiences help them become active citizens and capable future leaders.
Enrollment for the new 4-H year is currently open across Iowa. Children in kindergarten through third grade can participate in Clover Kids programs, while students in grades 4 through 12 can join as 4-H members. The organization provides a wide range of educational and leadership opportunities that support personal growth and career readiness.
National 4-H Week also coincides with Iowa 4-H Giving Day, a statewide fundraising event taking place from October 6-7. The initiative encourages alumni, families, volunteers, and supporters to invest in youth development programs that strengthen educational opportunities across the state. Contributions help support important focus areas, including STEM education, leadership development, healthy living, communications, civic engagement, agriculture, and natural resources.
Emily Saveraid, Iowa 4-H Foundation executive director, highlighted the importance of community involvement in supporting young people.
"National 4-H Week is a celebration of the opportunities, relationships, and experiences that help young people thrive," said Emily Saveraid, Iowa 4-H Foundation executive director. “Whether by enrolling in 4-H, volunteering, sharing a 4-H story or supporting Iowa 4-H Giving Day, everyone can play a role in helping young people discover their potential and prepare for what's next.”
Throughout National 4-H Week, communities are encouraged to celebrate youth achievements, recognize volunteers, share personal 4-H experiences, wear green in support of the program, and showcase the positive impact 4-H continues to make across Iowa. The celebration serves as a reminder of the lasting value of youth development programs and their role in preparing future generations for success.
