Meet Lindsay Peters - Iowa’s Passionate Pork Industry Educator

By Andi Anderson

Lindsay Peters, the new extension specialist at the Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC), is deeply passionate about the pork industry. Her role involves content development, website management, and overall support for IPIC programming efforts. Let’s learn more about her:

  • Background and Passion: Lindsay joined IPIC in early January. She’s not just knowledgeable but also gregarious, enjoying conversations and learning from others. Her daily goal? At least one good laugh! Lindsay considers herself an advocate for Iowa’s pork producers, committed to sharing industry news.
  • Educational Journey: Lindsay holds a master’s degree in animal physiology from Iowa State University (ISU), earned in December 2023. Her work at ISU allowed her to collaborate with IPIC-affiliated faculty and staff, building valuable connections with integrators, researchers, and pork associations.
  • Early Relationships: Lindsay’s proactive networking paid off. By establishing relationships early on, she hit the ground running in her role as the new extension specialist.
  • Farm Roots: Lindsay’s upbringing on a small hobby farm in northeast Nebraska shaped her passion. She raised cow-calf pairs, hogs, horses, and rabbits. Active in 4-H and FFA, she gained hands-on experience showing these species.
  • Graduate Research: Lindsay’s graduate work focused on ethology, aiming to improve caretaker mental welfare. Her research delved into learning styles, personality types, and cultural differences. She even developed a tailored swine euthanasia training module based on personality types.
  • Industry Welfare: Lindsay emphasizes the importance of barn labor welfare. Without well-cared-for labor, pig welfare remains incomplete. Her dedication to industry knowledge and caretaker well-being drives her work.

You can reach Lindsay Peters via email at lkieffer@iastate.edu or by phone at 515-294-8963. IPIC, established in 1994, aims to promote efficient pork production technologies, maintain industry leadership, and strengthen rural development efforts in Iowa.
