Iowa Learning Farms will host a cover crop and grazing field day near Epworth on Nov. 12 as part of its “Beyond the Basics: Advanced Cover Crop Series.” The event will take place from noon to 2 p.m. and is open to farmers and landowners at no cost. Attendees will also receive a complimentary meal while learning about practical uses of cover crops in modern agricultural operations.
The educational event aims to help producers better understand how cover crops can support both environmental stewardship and livestock production. Organizers will share information on integrating cover crops into farming systems and using them as a valuable forage source for grazing cattle.
“Cover crops are a critical tool in meeting Iowa’s water quality goals while maintaining healthy soils. In addition to their environmental benefits, cover crops can offer high-quality feed for livestock,” said Mitch Harting, Water Outreach Specialist with Iowa Learning Farms. “This field day will educate farmers and landowners on the potential grazing opportunities of cover crops and offer firsthand insights into putting cattle back on the land.”
The program will feature Shelby Gruss, Extension Forage Specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. Gruss will discuss how cover crops can provide nutritious forage for livestock while supporting overall farm productivity. Participants will gain insights into selecting and managing cover crops for grazing purposes.
Scott Hendricks, Conservation Agronomist with Dubuque County Watersheds, will also speak at the event. He will highlight ongoing efforts to encourage cover crop adoption and discuss available resources that can help farmers successfully implement conservation practices on agricultural land.
In addition, Jack Smith, a producer from rural Dubuque County, will share his personal experiences using cover crops as a forage and grazing source for cattle. His presentation will provide attendees with practical examples of how cover crops can be successfully incorporated into livestock operations.
The field day will be held at Smith Farm, located at 26129 Tivoli Lane, Epworth. Organizers encourage interested participants to reserve their spots in advance to ensure adequate seating and meal availability. Reservations and accommodation requests should be submitted by Nov. 5 through Iowa Learning Farms.
As an added benefit, attendees will be entered into a drawing for Iowa State Prairie Strips honey. The event is supported by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and reflects ongoing efforts to promote sustainable farming practices across Iowa.
By combining expert presentations with real-world farming experiences, the field day will offer valuable information for landowners and producers interested in improving soil health, supporting water quality goals, and creating additional grazing opportunities through the use of cover crops.
