Registration Open for Master Gardener Training

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will hold training sessions at 43 locations across Iowa this fall.

home demonstration garden with vegetables and flowers.The Master Gardener program is looking for people who are passionate about volunteering and gardening. No previous garden knowledge is required, as the training program equips participants to grow in knowledge about gardening best practices.

After completing the course, Master Gardener trainees work as volunteers within their communities, volunteering 20 hours per year and building their gardening know-how by participating in 10 hours of continuing education.

"The Master Gardener program is a great way to meet new people and to grow an excitement about gardening," said Megan Will, Dallas County Master Gardener coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach. "It also presents a tremendous opportunity to give back to the communities."

Iowa Master Gardener training sessions will be held starting in August or September, depending on location, and running through November. To see a full list of training locations or to apply, go to There also will be a training session held on campus at Iowa State on Nov. 3. The cost of the Master Gardener training is $195.

Individuals not interested in becoming a Master Gardener volunteer can still receive training. The ProHort program allows individuals to gain knowledge while earning a certificate of completion. Cost for the ProHort program is $550 and does not include any volunteer requirements.

Iowa Master Gardeners donated more than 115,000 volunteer hours during 2017, providing the equivalent of $2.7 million in labor to help beautify Iowa and address ongoing food security issues.
