Master Gardeners Offer Three Winter Webcasts
Iowa Ag Connection - 01/16/2018

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will host three Growing Season webcasts this winter. Master Gardeners will gain educational hours while learning about starting vegetable seeds and growing transplants, managing volunteers and building food security partnerships.

The two-hour webcasts will be shown at ISU Extension and Outreach county offices. Contact a county office for dates and times. The webcasts are free of charge and open to anyone who may be interested.

Winter webcast topics include:

- From Seed to Table, presented by Richard Jauron, horticulture specialist, and Caitlin Szymanski, local foods program coordinator, with ISU Extension and Outreach. Learn tips for starting vegetable seeds and growing transplants. Also get to know local food system resources in Iowa.

- Garden Helpers, presented by Aaron Steil, assistant director of Reiman Gardens, and Laura Irish, graduate research assistant in horticulture at Iowa State University. Explore best practices for managing volunteers from Reiman Gardens. Learn how Master Gardeners are volunteering as citizen scientists and contributing to research.

- Food Security Partners, presented by Tillie Good and Laura Liechty, youth and 4-H program specialists with ISU Extension and Outreach, and Carrie Chennault, graduate research assistant in agricultural education and studies at Iowa State. Hear how Master Gardeners are building projects that increase community food security. Also find out how to expand project partnerships with 4-H youth and volunteers.

The webcasts will provide ideas for Master Gardener volunteer projects and expand the knowledge base of volunteers. Master Gardeners can gain six continuing education hours for participating in the webcasts.

Funding for the webcasts is provided by the USDA SNAP-Education program.
