NASS Honors Vogel in Hall of Fame
Iowa Ag Connection - 04/22/2019

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) inducted into its Hall of Fame Frederic A. Vogel, an esteemed retired agency leader whose impact continues to resonate today. Throughout his career, Vogel was a driving force for continued improvements in data quality and a global leader in the development of statistical methodology for agriculture and economic statistics. His commitment to excellence in statistical theory and practice contributed substantially to agricultural statistics at NASS and internationally.

"Fred's commitment to transparency in statistical methods and procedures are still cornerstones of the NASS process," said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer. "His commitment is a major factor in establishing NASS as a recognized world leader in agriculture statistics. These accomplishments are built on a solid foundation formed by earlier NASS employees. We are reminded frequently of their contributions and are honored to have the opportunity to recognize some of them via the NASS Hall of Fame,"

Vogel began his 38-year NASS career as a student trainee in the Colorado field office while earning his B.S. in agricultural economics from Colorado State University. He held positions in California and at headquarters, earning his M.S. in statistics from Iowa State University along the way.

After serving as deputy state statistician in Illinois, he returned to headquarters, where he progressively served as chief of the Methods Staff, director of the Research Division, director of Field Operations, and director of what is now called the Statistics Division (then called the Estimates Division), before becoming chair of the Agricultural Statistics Board in 1999. He concluded his career when he retired from the World Bank in 2016.

NASS established the Hall of Fame to recognize former employees whose contributions to the agency and to agricultural statistics transcend time. Individuals honored in the Hall of Fame exemplify integrity, honesty, and commitment to public service.
