Heddleson Interns Announced for 2017

Two Iowa State University students will intern with Human Sciences Extension and Outreach's Heddleson Internship Program in 2017. The internships provide students with hands-on experience related to their programs of study and prepare them for a career in extension or community outreach, said Anthony Santiago, college projects specialist.

Emily Elliot, a junior majoring in nutritional science, will intern with ISU Extension and Outreach in Clay County. She will be teaching local residents about nutrition during community and county events. Her plans include hosting a nutrition and health day with the Clay County 4-H Youth Council and older 4-H'ers in the county, and sharing nutrition information at the Clay County Fair. She also plans to help create web access to nutrition resources and more outreach opportunities. Elliot will be working with Renee Sweers, a human sciences specialist in nutrition and wellness, and Jo Engel, Clay County's human sciences youth program coordinator.

Margaret O'Connor, a graduate student majoring in human development and family studies, will intern with ISU Extension and Outreach in five eastern Iowa counties. Her main interest in extension and outreach work is family health and underserved populations. As part of her internship she will be working to implement the "Wellness and Independence through Nutrition" program. In Linn County she will be helping facilitate the "Buy Eat Live Healthy" program, which educates Iowans about growing, using and storing fresh produce. O'Connor will be working with Phyllis Zalenski, a human sciences specialist in family finance.

The Heddleson internships are made possible through a gift from Laura Heddleson to the ISU College of Human Sciences to support students interested in working with Human Sciences Extension and Outreach, Santiago noted.

Heddleson grew up on a farm near Strawberry Point, Iowa. She earned her bachelor's degree from Iowa State University in home economics in 1931 and began working with Cooperative Extension in 1936. She was a home demonstration agent in Mahaska County, teaching women in their homes how to sew, clean and preserve foods. Over the years, she worked with extension in Iowa, Illinois and Kentucky. She retired in 1970 after more than 34 years in the profession, Santiago said.
