Webinar: Conversation About Hope and Revision on Environmental Progress
Iowa Ag Connection - 11/23/2021

The Iowa Learning Farms conservation webinar taking place Nov. 24 at noon CST will feature Jacqueline Comito, anthropologist and learning farms director at Iowa State University. Comito will explore what science says about how revising our stories and hope can impact environmental attitudes and behaviors. She will engage the audience in a discussion about not just telling better and more purposeful stories, but how our stories define our actions and beliefs.

Iowa Learning Farms is part of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

In the webinar, "Can Revision and Hope Improve the Environment?" Comito will continue the conversation from her November 2020 webinar looked at spiritual and cultural means of inspiring people to make changes for the good of the planet. During this engaging, interactive and motivational webinar, she will discuss ways the tools of revision and hope might integrate into environmental work when it seems like real change is elusive.

"With out-of-control fires, drought, water pollution and more, the news is grim and anxiety levels are increasing," said Comito. "It can be difficult to be hopeful. But the science suggests that it is the absence of hope that might make the situation hopeless. What is hope and how can we use it in our work? I think we need to better understand the role that our stories or narratives play in defining us and learn to tell more deliberate stories to reestablish hope and make progress together."

Participants in Iowa Learning Farms Conservation Webinars are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
