Meeting to Discuss Silver Lake Improvement Plan
Iowa Ag Connection - 11/08/2018

The City of Lake Park, Wenck Engineering, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will host a public meeting at 6 p.m., Nov. 14, at the Lake Park Community Center (903 S Market Street) to discuss plans for improving water quality and recreational opportunities at Silver Lake in Dickinson County.

Over the past year, members of the Silver Lake Steering Committee, Technical Advisory Committee, and the Wenck Consulting Team have reviewed past studies and information, considered new information from the consulting team, discussed desired lake uses and water quality goals, and considered management options to achieve those goals.

Results of this planning process will be presented at the meeting, along with the opportunity for community members to express their comments and ask questions about the long term management and improvement plan. Silver Lake was added to the State's list of Impaired Waters in 2002 due to high nutrient levels, non-algal turbidity and high levels of algae. The overall goal of this restoration project is to continue to improve water quality and recreational opportunities at Silver Lake and remove it from the Impaired Waters List.

Silver Lake is an important recreation destination, hosting more than 41,000 visitors each year. Popular activities at the lake include boating, fishing, relaxing, and wildlife watching. Lake and watershed improvements are expected to increase visitation and provide better recreational opportunities to visitors.

Any person attending the public meeting and has special requirements such as those related to mobility or hearing impairments should contact the DNR or ADA Coordinator at 515-725-8200, Relay Iowa TTY Service 800-735-7942, or Webmaster@dnr.iowa.gov, and advise of specific needs.
