Naig to Celebrate Iowa Local Food Day Oct. 11

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig will celebrate Iowa Local Food Day at Lincoln High School in Des Moines at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 11.

Naig will help serve a breakfast of sausage breakfast pizza, sunny corn muffins, and sweet potato rolls. Items for this breakfast were sourced from eight different growers across the state and include dairy, meat, grains and vegetables.

Naig will also present Chad Taylor, the Executive Chef of Des Moines Public Schools, with a Secretary's Ag Leader Award in recognition of his efforts to expand the offerings of local foods in the Des Moines schools.

Iowa school food service staff will be preparing over 170,000 meals using Iowa food products in more than 150 schools in nearly 50 school districts as part of Iowa Local Food Day celebrations. Participating schools will receive banners, posters and stickers and other fun items to help celebrate Iowa Local Food Day. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship received a $100,000 Farm to School Support Services Grant from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) that has supported a number of Farm to School activities throughout the year. Activities have included training for growers and food service directors focused on sourcing locally grown items, partnering with Summer Food Service Programs (SFSP), and the 2018 Iowa Farm to School Conference this past June.
