Quarterly U.S. Milk Production Up 1.7 Percent

Milk production in the United States during the third quarter of 2017 totaled 53.5 billion pounds, up 1.7 percent from the same three month period last year.

During the past month, California had the highest total production with about 3.01 billion pounds, but was one of just six states that had lower production compared to last year. Texas had the greatest increase in year-to-year output as that state produced 955 million pounds of milk in September, up 10 percent from the same period last year.

The average number of milk cows in the United States during the quarter was 9.40 million head, 4,000 head more than the April - June quarter, and 71,000 head more than the same period last year.
