Sonny Perdue Tapped as Trump's Ag Secretary
USAgNet - 01/19/2017

Donald Trump has chosen former Georgia governor Sonny Perdue to be his secretary of agriculture. The Washington Post reports that Perdue, a former Democrat who switched to the Republican Party before governing Georgia for two terms from 2003 to 2011, has a strong agricultural background. he grew up on a farm and earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine. As governor of Georgia, he also took conservative stances on immigration and voting rights and drew national headlines for holding a public vigil to pray for rain in 2007 amidst a crippling drought.

"The nomination of Sonny Perdue for Secretary of Agriculture is welcome news to the nation's farmers and ranchers," said American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall. "Gov. Perdue will provide the strong voice that agriculture needs in the new administration. He is an outstanding nominee."

If confirmed, Perdue will head a sprawling agency with a $155 billion annual budget and close to 100,000 employees. This makes it one of the largest federal departments, and one that includes branches ranging from the U.S. Forest Service to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and duties ranging from co-publishing the U.S. Dietary Guidelines to running the school lunch program.
